Whitelisting is a mechanism that allows some identified content to access a particular privilege. Regarding music distribution, as you may know, some channels use an automated content identification system that identifies copyrighted material. This system is integrated into the content uploading process, identifying any copyrighted material and blocking it or limiting its monetization on the platform. By whitelisting a channel or profile — for example, an affiliated company, or your PR agency — you can ensure that the channel's default policy will not be applied.
What is the default policy for each channel?
Currently, the channels that allow the whitelisting of profiles are the following:
YouTube
Once you distribute content to YouTube Content ID, YouTube will automatically identify any video that contains part of the audio and send a claim to the channel uploading it, claiming its monetization. This claim benefits the artist or owner of the rights distributing with Sepulchral Silence, as any user-generated content (UGC) is automatically claimed without the artist necessarily being a YouTube partner, which requires harder prerequisites. If you are into YouTube's partner program or you work with a specific channel for promotion purposes and you do not wish to receive this claim, but you still want user-generated content to be claimed on your behalf, you can ask us to add want yours or your partners channel to YouTube’s whitelist. Please find more information regarding YouTube whitelisting in this article.
SoundCloud
Soundcloud uses Audible Magic as a fingerprint service to scan UGC uploads and avoid copyright issues. If an end user uploads content that has been previously distributed to Audible Magic to their own Soundcloud page, the content will be automatically taken down. Please, check out our article SoundCloud's best practices to avoid copyright issues and have your catalog ready to stream.
TikTok
The best practice to include music in your TikToks is to always select it in the music library. However, TikTok's fingerprinting system scans the audio incrusted in all videos uploaded by its users to keep your copyrighted content protected. The default policy applied will depend on the type of user account:
- If uploaded from a brand/commercial account, TikTok will automatically block or mute the video. Commercial accounts have a special music library with licensed music to use in their commercial content. If you have authorized a brand to use your music in their content, please contact us with the ISRC and the link to their TikTok account, so that we can include them in the safelist.
- If uploaded from a content creator account(the regular account), the audio should be detected and matched to the asset in order to be monetized. If you find a video containing your music that is not being matched and monetized, please reach out to us with the link to the TikTok video + ISRC of your song. Our team will review the case and request a manual match to your asset.
FBRM
Facebook and Instagram only block art-tracks, as it is a channel policy not to allow art-tracks on its service. On the other hand, FBRM offers the possibility of adding a profile to a whitelist, stopping the Rights Manager from identifying the coincidence. However, we do not recommend this practice, as it stops the distributed content from generating royalties.
Platforms working with Audible Magic (Daily Motion, VIMEO, Twitch, etc)
Audible Magic's default policy is to automatically block the identified content on any of the services it works with (except for FBRM). Therefore, it would be necessary to whitelist any profile willing to make use of your content in any of those services.
