Correct artist tagging in a release is crucial for an optimal user experience. This article addresses considerations and suggestions related to artist categorization to determine whether a release should be sent to the “Various Artists” profile.
The proper application of these rules will ensure that your releases are published on the correct Spotify profile of the interpreting artists.
Categorization Rules
All releases with more than three primary artists and/or remixers will be automatically displayed as “Various Artists” at the album level on Spotify.
How to avoid sending a release to the Various Artists' profile?
To prevent automatic categorization as “Various Artists,” the sum of primary artist and remixer roles must not exceed three artists. In other words, your release and its tracks should have a maximum of three primary artists.
The roles 'remixer,' 'performer,' and 'primary artist' are considered primary artists by the channels. However, 'featuring' roles do not affect this rule.
For example:
- Release with 3 primary artists + 1 remixer = Categorized as "Various Artists".
- Suggestion: 2 primary artists + 1 remixer + 3 featuring = Avoids automatic categorization as "Various Artists".
⚠️ If you have already distributed your release, you only need to correct the artist distribution and request an update following the steps.
Specific Considerations
Individual Identification
If you intend to publish your release as “Various Artists,” note that although the album is categorized as “Various Artists,” each artist must be identified independently in their respective tracks.
Incompatible Roles
The roles “featuring,” “performer,” and “primary artist” are not compatible with each other. An artist cannot be listed with more than one of these roles simultaneously.
